Barchester - The Reigate Beaumont

Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know

The Reigate Beaumont carried out 'relative retribution' against us - a nasty phenomenon reported in the Daily Mail and the Victoria Derbyshire show. They unexpectedly banned us from giving our mother food or drink, timing the announcement for Christmas Eve for maximum hurt, distress and inconvenience. Then threatened to have us barred.

That since late April that year my sister and I had paid almost daily visits to give her drink, something they seemed mysteriously unable to do, made this an ominous turn of events. Our mother, who had advanced Parkinson's, was on (free) NHS Continuing Healthcare and it seemed - ahem - almost as if they had her on a covert pathway programme. They also needlessly restricted her to puree , even after a SALT team approved her for fork-mashable.

Then a senior nurse called the police out on Christmas Day - for knocking on a resident's door and wishing her Happy Christmas! No charges brought of course, still, it sounds really bad, doesn't it? Welcome to the world of care home defamation. Turns out Barchester have form on this. Visit the Your Voice Matters website, set up by another victim, for more.

We were never given the manager's email address all this time, and you could only complain to Barchester via snail mail. Crafty.

That all this turned out to have been secretly endorsed and almost certainly instigated by both Surrey Council's adult social care team and NHS Surrey Downs CCG made it even more disturbing. They would have known that this was the Christmas my mother nearly never got to see, after one of their dodgy Surrey care homes nearly killed her earlier that year. So to pull a stunt like this - it was pretty sick.

That I'd gone to the paper about that very care home accounts for it. The Council hates having its dodgy care home - or itself - exposed. And if you don't get Power or Attorney for your relative, they assume full legal control once mental capacity is gone. It can't be got retrospectively. You have been warned.

Beware first impressions

Spacious house and gardens and updated traditional furnishings in main lounge and smiley greetings makes for great first impression. Huge lawns are inaccessible by wheelchair. Excellent activities coordinator. However, frequent daily visits at variable times exposed incompetent care beneath the cosy decor:
1. Found my seriously sight impaired mother alone in her room struggling to nibble on dried burnt toast at 9am. The butter and marmalade were in tiny sealed packs on the tray and she needed assistance with this. Nobody had cared or noticed anything wrong. 2. At 5.30 pm found mother in distressed state. Staff had failed to place a drink on supper tray and when I offered water she drank 5 full glasses, one after the other 3. Poor practice of staff talking to me or others with mother present as though she was invisible or mentally incapable. An RGN's opinion rather than a GP medical diagnosis was entered in care plan and appears to have mislead all staff to believe mother had 'dementia' was 'deaf' and was 'blind' when she had none of these conditions. 4. Bad hygiene: Mother eating soup at table and her main course food plate had been placed on top of a dirty cushion belonging to another resident left discarded on dining table on top of two J cloths left on top of clean cutlery. Final complete breakdown of trust following incompetent staff failing to use initiative when low staffing issues caused neglect; mother was discovered by me left isolated with door closed and heat surge in room caused by underfloor heating breakdown. Room temperature was measured at 35 degrees Celsius. Will never forget this.
An 11pm drop in visit mother was lying with back exposed when ill with an infection with one thin blanket half on, half off bed. Staff had failed to remove digital hearing aids and curtains weren't drawn closed at night for warmth and comfort. Don't make a decision on this home based on its luxury surrounding
