Priorslee Pre-School

Six experienced childminders under one roof

This local charity has provided an invaluable service to local residents for the past twenty three years, leasing a Council Community Centre that is used for other community purposes i.e. church groups, slimming groups and children's parties. Being a charity it conforms to the Charities Act, being managed by an elected voluntary committee, and any profits made re-invested into the facilities and equipment.
The staff are friendly but firm- being mature they know the value of teaching children respect- not only for each other, but also for the equipment and the environment. Each keyworker has responsibility for a small group of children, and liaises very closely with each child's parents or guardians to give and take feedback on the individual child's progress. The 'open door' policy operated means that any parent can pop in to discuss their child's progress with the manager or keyworker. There is a full range of activities on offer, each child making a choice as they come through the door, ranging from sand and water play up to ICT work on an i-pad. The outside play area has a sensory garden, large climbing frame and many ride-on toys in a secure, gated area.
My grandchildren all attended this setting, and I have seen the support of local parents dwindle away over time. In the early days fund raising social events centering around the children and encouraging the parents to get to know each other were well attended, but the attitude has now changed to 'drop and run', and, despite the best efforts of the Committee to motivate parents, this attitude prevails. An example I witnessed personally was the cancellation of a Halloween Disco and fancy dress, a sellout the previous year, due to lack of ticket sales. It was only after cancellation, following a lengthy notice period, that parents began to request purchasing tickets.
I have visited the OFSTED website, and see that this pre-school was awarded a 'GOOD' rating in May 2014. I have always found it to be 'EXCELLENT'.

Not a good experience for us

We didnt enjoy our experience of this pre-school. The staff are lazy and do not listen to parents, the building is not designed for child care purposes and has limited resources. Most importantly my child was miserable and bored most of the time because the children did the same things every day, there was very little effort from the staff who were happy with the mediocre care they provided. The recent OFSTED report makes them sound 'ok' but they have been awarded Satisfactory again, evidence that there is little desire from the staff to improve. I would avoid this pre-school at all costs, there are far better childcare providers within a very close proximity.
