Pillar Box Gardens Nursery

Great nursery in Bow, E3

Our son attended this nursery from 10 months old and was really well looked after, especially in the baby room. The staff are caring and attentive and seem to genuinely enjoy their work. Our son was always happy to be dropped off and likewise when we picked him up.

Brilliant nursery, should have been rated...

My child really enjoyed learning and playing at Pillar Box Gardens. The staff were lovely and very caring to all of the little ones. There was daily communication on the activities that the little ones took part in and enjoyed. The nursery is always clean and conducive for the little explorers.
We would recommend them.

Fantastic experience at Pillarbox Gardens

My daughter attended this nursery for close to one year and I cannot say enough about the warm, loving, professional, constructive, engaging, enthusiastic experience she and our whole family had there. From the early days of settling in staff were patient and incredibly caring, taking their time with our daughter (then 10 months) and with us and assuring us that we could visit or call as often as we needed to feel comfortable with our new arrangements. From then until her last days at Pillarbox, she was given individual care with attentive caring staff. All of them knew her name and character traits, even those working in different rooms, and all took great affection for her. My daughter and her friends always seemed very happy there and before long she was jumping out of my arms as soon as we reached the door.
The nursery itself is spacious and with loads of activities. It's an active environment, as I would expect any place with young children to be. The garden is beautiful and the kids spent tons of time out there in the summer months. There was also a range of excursions planned to nearby attractions which the kids all looked forward to. Events were also organised regularly for families, with birthday parties, parents brunches etc. a great way to get to know other people in the nursery.
We left Pillarbox with heavy hearts because our daughter had reached the age to move to the sister nursery which was a little far from our house - although many of her classmates have gone there and are enjoying it. We're now at another well regarded nursery in the area but miss the warm and caring Pillarbox environment and the fantastic staff who work there. I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend this nursery.

Good Nursery

After reading the bad reviews I was really worried about putting my son in their care at 10mths old but after meeting them I felt I should give them a chance. I can say that they have taken good care of my son, the only agreement to other reviewers I have is that they have a high staff turnover. The manager is very helpful and takes on any concerns you have immediately the supervisors in the baby room and toddler room were really good, I developed a good relationship with all of them, I felt that they cared and loved my baby. He moved from there last August to attend the older nursery in Bow Road and again I cannot complain about anything so far. A testament in it's own is when I pick my son up he doesn't want to come home, he enjoys being there and that has put me once again at ease.

Very much improved!

My child has been at this nursery (at the Bow Road site which is for the older children) for nearly 2 years and since the beginning of this year, when a new manager joined, the nursery has improved dramatically. So much effort goes into providing a wide variety of learning opportunities for the children such as regular trips, which over the last year have included visits to the London Transport Museum, the local fire station, the local bus station, teddy bears picnics at victoria park and not forgetting weekly ballet lessons at Three Mills Studio (and in the past swimming lessons at york hall) - all of which are included in the price! My child learns so much and gets so much enjoyment from all of this. As well as this there is a fab xmas pantomime visit to the local theatre, a lovely nativity performance by the children and a well planned and fun summer sports day. All of this on top of the usual montessori days. Staff are great with my child - very warm and caring and my child has an amazing bond with her teacher. The current manager is very approachable and responsive to any needs or requests I have ever had. If you are looking for a good nursery in Bow - do take the time to visit this one and meet the manager.

Stay away at all costs

Stay away from the nursery at all costs as the staff and Director gossip like teenagers and make the atmosphere horrible, especially for the children whose parents challenge them.
We have never had problems financially and paid our fees in accordance with their terms and conditions which does not stipulate Monday - Friday (6pm) I put this in brackets because this little detail is how the director tries to forces cash out of parents. I challenged this and commented on various other facts like teachers asking me for cash in front of other teachers and parents? Why not send in an email? And does she think this is professional? Nothing gets communicated in writing? That's why there is mistakes? My child received 2 weeks' notice to leave the nursery that he'd been going to since he was 16 months. We never had one problem from 16 months to 2 years of age. Now my child is 2 years and 6 months and in 6 months nothing has been right in this nursery. The Montessori tasks and equipment are dated and not very appealing. The garden is only just being resurfaced during the summer months? Garden toys are appalling. Needs a good cleaning. The ceilings are filthy and some of the light fittings look like they are going to fall. Health and safety issues everywhere.
My child was in Fairfield road from 16 months to 2 years. The manager who is lovely, very professional and informative, completes her job successfully.
When he had to move to this part of the nursery Pillar box Gardens, we have had nothing but nightmares. The manager in Pillar Box gardens is what I can only describe as someone who is very lethargic and indolent and will not take responsibility for her actions instead she tries to shift liability. The director however has a similar mentality and bad attitude towards parents especially when challenged. As you can probably see in her reply to reviews. I have had to shed out another deposit and fee to find my child a real Montessori. (This is not Montessori)

Stress free and excellent value for money nursery

Dear parents, my son started to attend the Pillar Box nursery 8 months ago when he was turning 7 months. At the time he was only crawling and was not able to sit up nor eat purees. Soon after he started, straight away he started eating (all made from scratch and healhty) and few weeks later he was able to sit on his own. My son has very happy there and the staff is very caring and approachable. I would without a doubt recommend to anyone this nursery. The best in the borough really.

Apauling staff ratio!!!

Pilar box has to be the worst nursery that I have ever come across! The manager is just so rude and horrible she never has a smile on her face I mean I little smile won't kill . many staff have left due to the management team its just ridiculous staff over there get treated so horribly and also they have been put under so much pressure due to staff ratio , its just discussing that pillar box is the only nursery ever that counts in students and volunteer in ratio! I mean who does that?? I honestly and strongly wouldn't recommend this nursery!!

Staff Ratio

The staff:child ratio is in accordance with Ofsted requirements which is 1 staff member to 3 children in this age group. It is our practice, along with most other nurseries to take childcare students studying for NVQ2 or 3 or Montessori Diploma and those who look to volunteer in childcare before starting a childcare course. Students and volunteers compliment our staffing and in accordance with Ofsted requirements we are able to use long-term students to be included in out staff ratio'susually if a member of staff is absent due to sickness or annual leave. This benefits the children as the students/volunteers are known to them. Students/volunteers are never left alone with our children and are always mentored by permanent member of staff.
Staff turnover is low in an industry that is widely known for high staff turnover. The Manager has an excellent team and this has been reflected in our recent Ofsted Inspection this year.

Would not recommend

My son attended this nursery for less than 3 months. We felt it necessary to remove our son one day when the baby room was left with only one permanent member of staff and agency staff were required to top up the ratios. Worried parents' concerns were met with an unprofessional attitude. We were so distressed by what we experienced that we pulled him out with no other childcare in place (not something any working parents would do lightly).

Good Care Guide

I have replied to all of these comments raised but Good Care Guide have deleted them and we are seeking legal advice. If parents are interested in our childcare facility then please look at our recent Ofsted Report in which we are graded as 'Good'.

Key workers aren't treated well

I observed soon after joining the nursery that staff were often visibly upset. I then received a letter from the owner stating that numerous staff members were either fired or had resigned, and we were given unkind information as to why they were leaving. The letter said that parent's had been gossiping and that gossiping had made the nursery issues worse. The environment is owner & manager vs staff, & owner & manager vs parents. Staff turnover rates are awful & we were truly fraught with worry.

Owner & Manager Vs Staff

Again given the 500 characters given, yes this was the case, Staff did not want to follow nursery policy and the EYFS and Ofsted saw this upon one of their many visits given the complaints in June 2011. One of which was the parents did not like the changes the Manager wanted to instill to meet the EYFS. Ofsted approved of the changes the Manager wanted to make. Unfortunately, we had to dismiss, or put disaplinary procedures in place to members of staff that did not want to care for children

Steer clear at all costs

The management/owner at this nursery are the most unprofessional people I have ever encountered, pulled my daughter out along with 7 other parents out after 3 months due to high staff turnover and very poor management of childcare facilities. See complaints page on the Ofsted website for verification of comments about this nursery. This was early 2011 and it appears from previous comment the nursery continues to deliver very poor standards.

Will not recommend it

We stayed for 2 years with this nursery because it was the only nursery in the area which closed at 7pm. Since the new manager was appointed late 2010, we always had problems. There is a very high turnover of staff. The manager bullies the staff and sacked all of the old team when she arrived (or made them resigned by calling them "evil" in front of other staff members or by asking them to spy on their collegues). After this, each time a very good nursery nurse was hired, she left within a year.
