Active Learning Southgate Nursery

client of active learning

The problem with Active in Southgate is their communications. They aren't very adept at communicating important information to parents in an appropriate and timely manner and its not good enough considering it is around nursery events, hygeine ratings, illness and moving children up classes/introducing parents to staff. If they fixed this very important issue it would be a much better place. It also always feels understaffed...it is irrelevant that they adhere to government ratios because the staff always seem stressed and doing paper work. Needs to be sorted out .

In agreement

Yes I have to agree, communication has been particularly poor as late. An important concern was the misleading information surrounding the environment health report - we were informed it was a lack of training issue when in fact it was to do with basic hygiene requirements, preventing cross contamination etc. It seems the nursery had gotten too busy and valued staff have left due to being overlooked for promotional and not being allowed to do the job they have been hired for! New staff arriving but no proper introductions. However it still has huge positives and all the children seem happy and well cared for.

Would thoroughly recommend..

We love AL Southgate, our daughter joined when just turning 2 and is now 4, we were disillusioned with our old provider and took a chance with AL as it was newly(ish) opened but we are so happy that we made the move. They really live up to their name with our little one participating in activities such as Ballet, Zumba, Spanish, Cookery, Sports, Music, and of course the key stage learning curriculum throughout the week, they go out on trips to museums, farms, the local library and local theaters such as Chicken Shed, who even visited the nursery at Christmas with their wonderful Tales from the Shed Team much to the awe of the children.
Wonderful facilities & great staff = A truly special nursery.

The best nursery ever!

My daughter (just turned 4) has been at Active Learning, Southgate for almost two years now having previously been full time at two other nurseries from six months old. Having tried the other providers; one which was closed down due a long list of dreadful things and the other that I moved her from as she had clearly outgrown what they had to offer I can definitely give an unbiased review.

AL has a daily curriculum and they encourage the children to join in with the activity at the time. If they aren't interested then that's fine and they are allowed to do something different. They have a full time music teacher who during the summer taught them about Peter & the Wolf and the different sounds instruments make, at the end of this they put on a play for the parents. A full time nursery teacher who teaches them their letters and numbers along with science & technology and a sports coach who comes in several sessions a week. Alongside this they have various external contractors that come to the nursery on a daily basis; ballet, yoga, Spanish and Zumba and they are currently looking into swimming lessons. They also have their mentors / key workers that work alongside the others. Upstairs (for two's and over) they have four rooms that they rotate through daily; art room, science and technology, arts studio (which has a low level stage) and another room that has dress up, books etc. Each of these rooms is a home room for the different ages. Downstairs for the babies is equally as big and adorable. The children are encouraged to serve themselves at mealtimes and do not have any sugary or salty things. All food where possible is organic. They are regularly taken on outings and The Chicken Shed Theatre was brought in for them as Christmas - even the babies loved it! My daughter absolutely loves this place, it's a nightmare trying to get her home. She adores all the staff and has learnt an amazing amount - she wants to go to nursery every day!
