Aberdour Primary School Nursery
Uncaring and heartless approach to a pupil's grief
My daughter attends Aberdour Primary School and has recently experienced the death of her father. The school was informed of her father's illness and then again updated and at the time of his death along with a very specific request was made to ensure that all staff members were informed. A phased return was agreed and on her first day back a few members of staff approached my daughter with condolensces and the odd hug. However, the following day my daughter was reprimanded for not having practiced a piece of music by her teacher. This was in front of the whole class. My daughter then got very upset and had to explain that she hadn't completed this as her dad had died. The following week the school were continuing with plans for celebrating father's day despite my daughter's situation, with card making and a presents room. Leaflets were handed out to everyone in the class including my daughter. The teacher then withdrew her leaflet saying that of course she didn't need one. Both of these incidences are beyond uncaring. I had a meeting with the headteacher last week and had asked that the leaflet around father's day be sent home and had also requested that all staff members were made aware of the situation. I gave all of my contact details to the headteacher. To date I have had no response, and the first date for presents day was yesterday. My daughter has therefore had to be kept off school at a time when she actually needs her friends. All that was originally required was a very quick staff meeting to tell everyone of my daughter's situation and a quick list of agreed actions to manage the situation sensitively on her behalf. I believe that the school headmistress did not care enough to make time to do this and has not yet apologised. This is a shameful legacy that this school has left with our family. My daughter doesn't understand why no one cares her main teacher has not even acknowledged her father's death. These are supposed to be trusted people who care.
